October is here, and it’s one of the most exciting months of the year—especially if you’re in New Mexico!
So, what makes October such a blast in New Mexico?
Well, we kick things off with the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the largest hot air balloon festival in the world!
Picture this: hundreds of balloon enthusiasts gathering to lift off into the sky.
For we locals, it’s a magical time as we wake up to see colorful balloons dotting the morning sky. You might even spot balloons making their descent as they search for landing spots—sometimes even landing in the Rio Grande!
You’ll see “chasers” in their trucks, loaded with balloon gear, racing to help their balloonists land safely and transport everyone back to the fiesta grounds. It’s a thrilling experience attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors!
Just this past Sunday, while we were setting up our booths at the Rail Yards Market downtown, a couple of balloons landed nearby. Talk about a perfect photo op!
In addition to the balloon fiesta, we also celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). It’s such a beautiful tradition where families honor their deceased loved ones as if they were guests at a joyful reunion.
This celebration typically happens here in New Mexico on the last weekend of October. Last year we were part of the Dia de Los Muertos celebration at La Parada. It's a great place to get the full experience and it's on again this year, held by one of the nicest families on earth, the Montoya family at their La Parada store & Farm & Table restaurant on 4th St, in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. If you haven't been it is definitely worth a visit.
And on that same weekend and on October 31st, we also celebrate Halloween at festivals and parties as everyone gets into the spooky spirit.
Plus, October means Oktoberfest is in full swing and New Mexico boasts a surprisingly vibrant & prolific craft beer scene.
There’s just so much happening!
